The Intellectual Property Mediation competition is a unique event organized by the Mediation and Conciliation Center of the Intellectual Property Registry and aims to promote the practical study of intellectual property law, particularly copyright and related rights in Guatemala, through the simulation of mediation hearings in a realistic context.
Likewise, the competition aims to train ethical lawyers with skills in public speaking, analysis, negotiation, communication and teamwork; and seeks to encourage the use and dissemination of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms.
The event is open to law students from any national or international university. Interested students are invited to form teams of two to three members, which can be from the same university, different universities (inter-university teams), or they can register under the direction or sponsorship of a law firm based in Guatemala.
The dynamics of the event consist of the analysis of a hypothetical case in the field of intellectual property; for this, the participating teams will be assigned a role under which they must prepare their requests and arguments.
The competition is organized in two phases:
The winning team will receive an award, as will the team with the best oral presentation, and there will be an honorable mention for the spirit of mediation. The competition's closing event and awards ceremony will take place, according to the schedule of activities, during the FIRST INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY CONGRESS organized by the Intellectual Property Registry of Guatemala.
